Chris While and Julie Matthews release their 13th studio album ‘Days Like These' with twelve new songs and a host of fantastic musicians (Miranda Sykes, Dan Walsh, Tom Chapman, Johnny Heyes and Kellie While) supporting Chris and Julie in celebration of their 30th Anniversary.
After three decades of writing and performing together they show no signs of lacking inspiration and enthusiasm, once again covering a wide range of topics and emotions on 12 new songs.
‘Kalamazoo’ (While/Matthews) tells the remarkable true story of how the Gibson Guitar company has attempted to keep secret the fact that, during WW2, the workforce was made up predominantly of women who produced thousands of the now-celebrated ‘banner’ guitars. The song asks why this had remained unknown for so long, and is also a tip of the hat to John Thomas who uncovered the story and subsequently wrote a book about it.
‘Trusted, Mistrusted’ (While) reflects on the mystery of Chris’s local post office which closed overnight, and why the lovely man and woman who ran it left under great stress and secrecy. Now we know…
‘Good Intentions’ (Matthews) is a comment on the toxic and prevalent cancel culture where opinions are twisted and hijacked by opposing political agendas.
‘Blood Red Moon’ (Matthews) is a stripped down production giving While’s vocal space to shine and asks the question, “Will we ever learn?” – a song that looks at prejudice, intolerance and persecution.
‘Come to Me’ is the story of a mother’s struggle, losing her daughter to a cruel and abusive cult leader and the patience it took to get her back.
‘King of Sheds’ (Matthews) and ‘I Will Carry You’ (Matthews) are Julie’s emotional responses and reflections on the death of her beloved dad.
There’s plenty of light to counteract the emotional shade on the album, though – ‘Days Like These’ (Matthews) is a joyous celebration of being happy in the moment, as are ‘Lucky Today’ (While), ‘Our Corner of the World’ (While) and ‘Like the Sun’ (Matthews).
The album concludes with ‘30 Years Along’ (Matthews), Julie’s reflection, gratitude and celebration of the last three decades of the duo. The chorus will be of a particular delight to longtime followers of Chris and Julie as it references lots of their songs through the years.
Days Like These features a stellar cast of musicians: Tom Chapman on Cajon, Miranda Sykes on double bass, Johnny Heyes on electric guitars, Dan Walsh on banjo, Kellie While on harmony vocals and a host of guest singers on a rousing refrain in the title track!
